Bloating and Water Retention

When women reach a certain age, they begin to go through menopause. This is when the body has reached the end of fertility. For the majority, menopause begins around age 50, but for some, it may start earlier.
Menopause begins with a reduction in the production of hormones estrogen and progesterone. This reduction causes many symptoms including: hot flashes, flushes and/or cold flashes, night sweats, mood swings, thinning hair, irregular periods, and vaginal dryness.
In response to these symptoms, many woman start taking estrogen replacement medication. A common side effect of these medications is water retention. Water retention, or edema as it’s medically known, is defined as the accumulation of excess fluids in bodily tissues. Often, water retention is associated with bloating, weight gain, and frequent urination at night. One very common symptom of water retention is fluctuation of weight. Try weighing yourself over a period of time; if you notice weight fluctuation of around 5 lbs, chances are its water retention.
Here are some tips to prevent water retention:
- Exercise – This benefits almost every aspect of life. Exercise can you look and feel younger, keep your heart healthy and help prevent water retention.
- Avoid salt – Excessive sodium in the blood stream can cause water retention, so lay off the salty food.
- Drink water – This may sound counterproductive, but many times water retention is caused by to dehydration. Our bodies hold onto water because it thinks we are dehydrated, so make sure to stay hydrated.
- Avoid certain drinks – Avoid caffeinated beverages, alcohol and sugary drinks, as they may dehydrate you.
- Eat a healthy diet – Make sure to eat enough fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Eating healthy can go a long way in preventing water retention.
